The pages inside are a departure from the usual eclectic mix of comic features and instead offer an extended visual essay that tells the fictional life story of the artist, Will ‘‘Chicken-Fat’’ Elder, which parodies the 1949 LIFE magazine photo essay on Jackson Pollock.4 Inside the ‘‘Special Art Issue,’’ many black-and-white reproductions of wellknown works of art by Picasso, Rodin, Vermeer, and Leonardo da Vinci were all claimed to have been made by Will ‘‘Chicken-Fat’’ Elder, along with his new ‘‘abstractions,’’ which included electronic diagrams, weather maps, playing In the Polish-language section of instructions for the use of aspirin, MAD magazine’s Harvey Kurtzman found the word ‘‘potrzebie.’’ The word first appeared in a parody of a suspense thriller, ‘‘Murder the Story’’ (May 1954), with art by Jack Davis, where all the character dialogues were mixed up as non sequiturs.
